Use Islands For Storage

Storage in your kitchen doesn’t always have to be built in or along the walls.  Kitchen islands serve as both a workspace and an ideal storage place, and adds a dynamic and striking design element to your kitchen.

Don’t underestimate the value of using your kitchen island for storage.  Installing a cutting board, cutlery drawer, small sink or even a trash drawer will save you valuable time.  Store your pots and pans, pot holders and serving platters inside the island.

Place your cook top on top of your island, freeing up the wall space that once house the hood.  Consider installing a microwave in your island.  They are known for using a lot of counter top space.  Attach hooks and bars on the sides of islands to hang kitchen towels and pot holders.  Open shelving systems can house your cook books.

If you entertain a lot, consider adding a storage and work space that can be moved around, like a cart on wheels or rolling island.  Incorporate drawers for plastic containers and everyday cooking utensils.  That will free up your counter tops and kitchen cabinets.

Kitchen islands are often not looked upon as storage, but indeed they can be utilized in this fashion.  They will help free up the clutter along your walls and counter tops.  You just have to figure out if you kitchen is large enough to have one.
